Heim joints, also known as rod end bearings, are used wherever an articulating joint is required, most commonly on the ends of control rods and steering links. Heim joints contain a ball swivel with an opening through which a bolt or other attaching hardware may pass. Fits into a tapered hole in the steering knuckle. A protective encasing prevents dirt from getting into the joint assembly. Motion control ball joints tend to be retained with an internal spring, which helps to prevent vibration problems in the linkage.
